Oxidized Polyethylene Wax (OPE Wax)

Oxidized Polyethylene (OPE) wax is the oxidized derivative of PE wax and can be formulated into stable wax emulsions, imparting scratch resistance, slip and a pleasant feel to waterborne systems. How to emulsify oxidized PE wax?

Through alkaline saponification (e.g. amines/alkanolamines) under high shear in water to make a wax emulsion; the higher the acid value, the easier it emulsifies.

What does adding oxidized PE wax do in waterborne coatings?

It improves film scratch resistance, slip and feel, and enhances antiblocking and leveling.

How to choose OPE wax versus oxidized F-T wax?

For waterborne/emulsion systems choose OPE wax; for PVC dry-blend lubrication choose oxidized F-T wax.
